Look around. You'll find other summer filmmaking programs for teens. Are the goals realistic? Is your child interested in a whirl-wind tour of video production, with very little ownership in the final product? Or do they want to take their time and do things the correct way? Writing and directing a narrative film is hard even for the pros. We're not impressed with what we've seen from other camps.
A 30sec commercial is the perfect goal for a 3-week course. That gives our instructors enough time to make the project meaningful. Of course, we cover all of the basics of shooting and editing digital video. But we also talk about project planning and working with a client (and eachother!). Like all good artists, your children will become obsessed with perfection and attention to detail.
The Spec Spot doesn't hire camp counselors, we hire filmmakers. Our curriculum is developed by Jeff Castle, program director of Video and Broadcast production at Albany High School. Jeff has a single subject CA teaching credential, a vocational credential in mutlimedia production, and a masters degree in education.
